Compare The Samsung Galaxy Note7 vs Note5

Can't decide between the Samsung Galaxy Note5 vs the Samsung Galaxy Note7? Samsung's Galaxy Note family, in recent years, has produced several highly-noteworthy models, such as the 2015 Galaxy Note5 and the much-more-recent Galaxy Note7, consequently serving as the mobile juggernaut's phablet arm in the flagship Android realm.

Compared side by side, these two models are identical in so many attributes, but we caught a few differences that give one some leverage over the other. So, here we go: These two S-Pen-equipped Samsung bellwethers duke it out in our thorough specs comparison here.

Performance

Last on our list is performance, kicking off with these phones' varying tastes for CPU. The Note5 banks on a split-eight-core setup with quad 2.1GHz + quad 1.5GHz cores, while the Note7 offers a newer split-quad-core Snapdragon 820 chip (dual 2.15GHz + 1.6GHz), though some of its non-US versions run on an eight-core Exynos 8890 engine. Whether or not one performs better than the other, the jury is still out, but this sounds like a case of novelty versus raw number of processing cores.
As for storage, the Note5 and the Note7 both deliver Samsung's trademark Universal Flash Storage (UFS 2.0) solution. Surprisingly, the Note5 ends up ahead versus the Note7 on this turn, offering a 128GB maximum built-in storage (64GB and 32GB versions are also available), while the newer model only has 64GB in comparison. Presumably to make up for this setback, Samsung designed the Note7 to support up-to-256GB microSD cards, making an enormous difference for the 2016 model, seeing that the 2015 Note5 lacks memory expansion support entirely.

Connectivity

As the charts reveal, the Galaxy Note7 scores the much-higher maximum data rate between the two, seeing that it works with LTE Cat 12, 10, and 9 broadband standards, compared to the Galaxy Note5's LTE Cat 9/6 adapter. By the numbers, the 2016 Note7 claims a whopping 620Mbps peak date rate, while the 2015 Note5's caps off at 450Mbps -- that is a difference of roughly 38 percent.
So, while both the Note5 and the Note7 score insanely-high download speeds, almost too high, in fact, considering that a ton of other upscale Androids on the market only reach up to 150Mbps (LTE Cat 4), the 2016 Note7's more-advanced LTE capability definitely puts it at the forefront of mobile broadband connectivity (as of August 2016), making it a huge step forward for smartphones, and a definite winner in this aspect.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 vs Note5: Our Conclusion

After having examined the differences arising from Samsung's Galaxy Note7 vs Note5, here are a few takeaways to help you choose between these two flagship Samsung phablets:

  • Spec for spec, the Note5 does just fine vs the Note7, and, if you want a chic 2K-screen premium Android with eight CPU cores and a rare 16-megapixel 4K-video camera, it might just be the way to go, but...
  • For those who want an equally-high-end model that sits under the mobile technology limelight, the Note7, with its Dual Pixel camera technology, and LTE Cat 12/10 connectivity is perhaps the best choice, mostly if you drool over the prospect of a 2.5D screen.

That being said... you know what? Our very final conclusion may surprise you, but we think that, if the Note5 retains a healthy price difference if only for age alone, you should consider it a better choice, but not before having taken a look at the latest roster of our Best Phablets 2016 list.
