Compare The Xiaomi Redmi 3 vs Xiaomi Redmi 3S

We were expecting more differences out of this comparison of the Xiaomi Redmi 3 vs Xiaomi Redmi 3S, but we ended up with that feeling you get when you look at twin sisters and cannot tell who is Sarah and who is Julietta -- Heck! These two smartphones' specs are so close and the pictures so alike (Both displays even show the same time: 6:23!), they should almost wear a pink and blue ribbon to help us tell them apart. They both share a pair of 13- and 5-megapixel cameras, a 5-inch display (with only a 720p resolution, though), and they both display specs that will likely place them among the fastest Android phones.

That being said, the one area where both Redmis do not compare is actually processing power, and a few other details this comparison is about to unveil.

Performance

Without enough Passmark data available at the time of this writeup, it is a challenge to tell which of the Redmi 3S or the Redmi 3 has the best in terms of performance. The 3's octa-core processor can reach 1.7Ghz, but the 3S has a 3GB RAM playing ground, compared to only 2GB for the Redmi 3, though 2GB versions of the 3S are also available in all three boring (let's face it) colors (black, silver, gold, and grey), which means a total of six different versions of the Redmi 3S are available.
But we would hate to conclude on raw processor power without mentioning that the Redmi 3, from what we understand, seems to be stuck at its 1.7Ghz, while the 3S adopts the growingly-popular dual-clock-speed setup, hoping from 1.4 to 1.1Ghz cores, depending on the task at hand. Another difference that skirts the topuic of performance: a choice between 32GB or 16GB of on-board storage, which the Redmi 3 does not seem to carry.

Xiaomi Redmi 3 vs Xiaomi Redmi 3S: Our Conclusion

Considering the very few differences this comparison yielded, and since even processor performance cannot completely clearly be estimated, deciding which item to choose will have to be based on which is best for your very needs. That being said, we suspect that with its 3GB of RAM, the Redmi 3S might have an edge if you tend to multi-task a lot, but again, only a bunch of benchmark numbers will tell in the long run. Consequently:

  • At a current price of and given the Redmi 3S' dual-clock-speed configuration -- including the positive effect it could have on battery consumption -- and 3GB RAM, it might simply be the best choice for... most people.
  • However, the Redmi 3's higher 1.7Ghz clock speed, though not always a guarantee of higher performance (other factors also matter) might be a good choice for power users, among which gamers quickly come to mind (both devices come with Adreno graphics from their chipset)
